PROFILE OF THE INSPECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE
The current Inspector General - Mr. Francis Alieu Munu was appointed to his post on Friday 20th August 2010. Before his appointment, he was in- charge of Crime Services.
He hailed from Mateboi, Bombali District; he was born in 1957 to a humble couple. The young Francis Munu attended the District Council Primary School where he took the Selective Entrance Examination and emerged with flying colours. He later proceeded to the Kolenten Secondary School in Kambia , the Ahmadiyya Muslim Secondary School and the St. Edwards Secondary School in Freetown; where he took the General Certificate of Education Examination Ordinary level {G.C.E `O` Level} and the Advanced level Examination[`A` level] respectively.
Mr Francis Munu was admitted to the Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone then known as the `Athens of West Africa` in 1979. He later graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. After a brief spell in the Civil Service, he enlisted into the Sierra Leone Police as Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police in 1984; and rose through the ranks to become the Chief Executive in the Sierra Leone Police.
He later proceeded to the African Centre for Crime Prevention Research and Studies in Cairo, where he read for the Certificate in Criminal Investigations and Evidence. He is also a graduate of the National Police Staff College in Bramshill, United Kingdom, where he read the Post Graduate Certificate in Criminal Justice and Police Administration. He also holds a Master`s Degree in Business Administration {MBA} from the Institute of Public Administration and Management [IPAM]; University of Sierra Leone.
The new police boss had served in several commanding positions in the Sierra Leone Police, such as Chief Police Officer- Bo Division, Chief Police Officer- Port Loko and Kambia Districts respectively, Regional Police Commissioner- Northern Province and Senior Assistant Commissioner in-charge of Operations.
During the restructuring process, the ranks of Commissioner and Senior Assistant Commissioner were merged to become Assistant Inspector General of Police [AIG]. Consequently, he became Assistant Inspector General of Police in- charge of Personnel, Training and Welfare. Before his present appointment, he was Assistant Inspector General of Police in-charge of Crime Services with the Criminal Investigations Department, Special Branch, Interpol, Criminal Intellegence Service and Family Support Unit under his supervision,
Speaking to the Sierra Leone Police Media, the newly appointed Inspector General Police said ` I was promoted from the rank of Superintendent to Assistant Commissioner because of my performance and I had always demonstrated the ability to lead.`
Little wonder though, when Mr. Keith Biddle, the British born Inspector General of the Sierra Leone Police was given the mandate to prepare a succession plan , he identified him as one of those candidates most suitable for consideration as future Inspector General of Police. He was Keith Biddle`s Operations Officer throughout his stay as Inspector General of the Sierra Leone Police. During that period, the new Police Boss represented the Sierra Leone Police in the transition from war to peace and participated in the tri-partite arrangement that led to the disarmament of the warring factions.
Mr. Francis Munu contributed immensely to the post war stability of Sierra Leone by leading the Community Arms Collection and Destruction Exercise. He had also contributed to the restoration of civil authority throughout Sierra Leone and in the Security Sector Reform Process and Policy Formulation.
