IGP Sellu Embarks on Police Performance Audit in Bo and Kenema

Bo/Kenema, Sierra Leone – Tuesday, 2 September 2025 – The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr William Fayia Sellu, has embarked on a performance audit of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) in the Southern and Eastern Regions, as part of efforts to restore public trust and confidence in the SLP.

Addressing police personnel during his engagements, IGP Sellu stressed the importance of proactive policing through regular patrols and increased visibility. He reminded officers of their oath to uphold the Constitution, cautioning that public trust could be undermined if the police waited for challenges to escalate before acting.

“Police visibility must be paramount for effective security services,” he said, while urging Local Unit Commanders to strengthen collaboration with Local Policing Partnership Boards and Tasking and Coordinating Groups (TCGs) to ensure more effective policing.

The IGP also highlighted the growing threat of drug-related crimes, which he described as a major risk to peace and stability in communities. He called on officers to intensify their efforts by improving community relations and working collaboratively to prevent insecurity in Bo, Kenema and surrounding areas.

In a related engagement, Mr Sellu met stakeholders in Kenema following the alleged armed robbery incident that claimed the life of Reverend Father Augustine Dauda Amadu, a Catholic priest. The IGP encouraged community members to hold open discussions on measures to prevent similar occurrences.

Stakeholders expressed appreciation for the police chief’s intervention and emphasised the need for additional police stations, given Kenema’s growth into a major city. They further raised concerns about the release of hardened criminals who, after being charged to court, are quickly freed and subsequently pose threats to society.

Concluding the meeting, IGP Sellu thanked stakeholders for their candid contributions, noting that many of the concerns underscored the importance of community involvement and the expansion of police infrastructure to strengthen visibility and effectiveness.

The performance audit and stakeholder engagements form part of the SLP leadership’s ongoing efforts to enhance accountability, raise policing standards, and build stronger partnerships with the public for improved safety and security.
