Cape Town, South Africa – 29 August 2025 – The Secretary General of INTERPOL, Mr Valdecy Urquiza, met with Sierra Leone’s Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr William Fayia Sellu, on the sidelines of the 27th INTERPOL African Regional Conference to discuss strategies for combating transnational organised crime.
During the meeting, IGP Sellu outlined Sierra Leone’s ongoing efforts to strengthen information and data-sharing mechanisms among national security institutions and agencies. He stressed that effective collaboration with INTERPOL has been instrumental in addressing cross-border criminal activities in the country.
Mr Urquiza reaffirmed INTERPOL’s commitment to supporting the Sierra Leone Police, pledging to work closely with WAPCCO and to facilitate the decentralisation of INTERPOL’s operations at the regional level.
The INTERPOL Secretary General also commended the Government of Sierra Leone, particularly President Dr Julius Maada Bio, for his initiatives at the United Nations Security Council. He noted that these efforts have significantly enhanced INTERPOL’s representation and active involvement in global security matters.
The engagement between IGP Sellu and Mr Urquiza underscored both parties’ commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation and fostering progressive collaboration in tackling transnational organised crime across Africa and beyond.
